A Market Update from Terry Panigiris! What’s Happening & What It Means for You.

Markets have been on a rollercoaster lately, and we know that uncertainty can be unsettling. Global events, U.S. recession concerns, and trade tensions are making headlines, so we wanted to share a quick update on what’s happening and what it means for your investments.

Is the U.S. Headed for a Recession?

The U.S. economy is showing signs of strain, with businesses hesitant to invest, government job cuts impacting consumer spending, and market volatility on the rise. While the U.S. hasn’t entered an official recession yet(two consecutive quarters of negative growth), some indicators suggest the economy is slowing.

Trade Tensions Are Adding Pressure

Ongoing tariff disputes between the U.S. and key trading partners like China, Canada, and Mexico are making markets more volatile. Businesses that rely on global trade are feeling the impact, which could affect stock prices and corporate earnings.

Global Growth: Slower but Stable

Despite the uncertainty, the world economy is still growing, just at a slightly slower pace.

  • The U.S. economy is expected to grow 2.2% in 2025 before easing to 1.6% in 2026.
  • The Eurozone remains sluggish, with growth around 1.0% to 1.2%.
  • China is projected to expand at 4.4% by 2026, lower than in past years but still solid.

Inflation & Interest Rates – Where Are We Headed?

Inflation remains higher than expected but is starting to ease.

  • In major economies, inflation is projected at 3.8% in 2025, slowing to 3.2% in 2026.
  • Australia’s inflation trend is improving, which may give the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) room to adjust interest rates if needed. The RBA meeting is scheduled from March 31 to April 1, with markets predicting a potential rate cut in May.
  • The ASX 200 & Australian Markets

The ASX 200 recently saw some declines, closing at 7,749.1points on March 13. Concerns over global trade policies, rising public debt, and business insolvencies have contributed to cautious market sentiment. However, there are positive signs:

  • Inflation is moderating, reducing pressure on interest rates.
  • Recent U.S. inflation data was milder than expected, easing fears of stagflation.
  • The RBA is monitoring global economic shifts to guide future rate decisions.

Looking Ahead

Markets can be unpredictable in the short term, but long-term investors shouldn’t panic over daily fluctuations. Projections suggest the ASX 200 could rebound, with estimates ranging between 7,058 and8,532 points by early 2026. Areas like defense spending are seeing increased investment interest amid shifting global priorities.
