Market Update: Tariffs, Turbulence & What It Means For Your Portfolio

You may have noticed recent volatility in financial markets, largely due to new U.S. tariffs. These trade policies are causing global ripple effects, and we’re here to help you understand what this means for your investments.

What’s Changing?

Tariffs are taxes on imported goods. The latest U.S. measures include:

  • A 10% base tariff on most imports, including from Australia.
  • Steeper tariffs—25% on steel and aluminium.
  • Higher rates for specific countries: China up to 64%, Vietnam up to 46%.

These changes aim to protect U.S. industries but raise costs for businesses and consumers, which could impact company profits and share prices.

Market Impact

Uncertainty around tariffs has shaken markets:

  • The ASX/S&P 200 is down 7.1% since mid-February.
  • The Dow dropped nearly 4% in a day; NASDAQ fell almost 6%.

While some sectors struggle, areas like bonds and infrastructure remain more stable.

How Will This Affect Australia?

The direct impact on Australia is limited, as only 5% of our exports go to the U.S. However, the indirect effects could be more significant. Our biggest trading partners—China (37% of exports) and Japan (15%)—are more exposed to these tariffs. If their economies slow, it could reduce demand for Australian goods and services.

Is This a Market Crash?

We are currently in “correction” territory—a decline of 10% or more. A full-blown market crash would mean a 20%+ drop, potentially triggering recessions and job losses.

However, many experts believe the tariffs are being used as a negotiation tool and could be adjusted or rolled back if economic pressures mount. Historically, markets tend to recover as uncertainty diminishes.

History suggests that political leaders are wary of major economic disruption during election years, especially when markets form part of their political platform. If the U.S. starts walking back on tariffs or reaches negotiated agreements, markets could rebound just as quickly as they fell.

What Comes Next?

Several possible scenarios could unfold:

  • A U.S. Policy Reversal – If the administration adjusts or scales back tariffs, markets could rebound.
  • Escalation & Retaliation – Other countries might impose counter-tariffs, increasing market volatility.
  • Inflation & Interest Rates – Tariffs are expected to add 2.5% to U.S. inflation, which could limit the U.S. Federal Reserve’s ability to cut interest rates.
  • Resilient Growth Sectors – Areas like technology, AI, and infrastructure remain strong investment themes, regardless of trade policy shifts.

What Should Investors Do?

Stay calm and stay diversified. While market volatility can be unsettling, reacting impulsively can do more harm than good. Some key takeaways:

✅Diversification matters. A well-balanced portfolio can help manage risks.

✅Active management is key. Passive, U.S.-centric strategies may not be enough in this new environment.

✅Long-term trends still hold. Innovation in AI, digital transformation, and infrastructure investment continues to create opportunities.
